“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.”
– Marcel Proust
We have always enjoyed travelling and exploring new places and we’ve always thought travelling the world was an exciting adventure. Over the years we’ve met and heard of people who have gone on their RTW trips but we have always lacked the guts and motivation to do the same.
That all changed in February 2012 when an encounter with a Dutch couple (who were seasoned travellers) in Thailand sparked our travel itch.
Paul was bitten first. During lunch one afternoon in March, Paul asked Sophia if she would be open to leaving her job to go travel for a year. She thought he was crazy and freaked out back at the office because he sounded so serious about the idea. Then she started reading RTW travel blogs and came across several posts that led her to consider the idea. Namely, it was The Art of Non-Conformity and BootsnAll‘s posts that inspired Sophia to challenge her comfort zone.
Fast forward to June 2012 and this blog was born. It was started by Sophia as a ‘why not’ project. Back then we haven’t yet made any real commitment to the RTW trip but Sophia thought it would be a fun side project to document the decision making and fact-finding process. Also in case we do decided to go for sure, we’d have a head start with the blog. Next thing we know, the more research we do, the more emotionally invested in the trip we get. Our planned departure is for October 2013 and we can hardly contain our anticipation now!
We are excited (and partly terrified) to be going on this once-in-a-lifetime journey and we are so glad you are here to join us! The many blogs and discussions in the travel community gave us encouragement and inspiration to make this jump and we hope that ours will be able to contribute to the conversations.
We most definitely have caught the travel bug and we hope that so will you.
